The pair had been married for 19 months. Asante stated that Theresa’s only fault was being pregnant and placing her trust in the facility. He described her as a gentle, peaceful and unproblematic soul whose life was cut short by what he called reckless decisions made by some people at the hospital. Their newborn son, he wrote, has been robbed of the unconditional love of a devoted mother.
Asante said the ordeal left both families devastated. He recalled the pain of collecting his father-in-law from the airport two weeks earlier after the older man returned to Ghana sooner than planned. Theresa’s mother, he noted, is struggling with the loss of her only child. Colleagues at the Ministry of Health and members of ICGC Covenant Temple are also mourning with the family.
In the same post, Asante pointed to unprofessionalism, manipulation and extortion in the events surrounding his wife’s care. He promised that after honouring Theresa on 28th August 2026, the full truth would be told. He called on the Ministry of Health to investigate the circumstances and hold public healthcare workers accountable so that other families do not face the same outcome.
R2Bees member Mugeez reacted publicly on the same day. He described the death as resulting from gross negligence and demanded that the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service sanction practitioners who engage in such conduct.
This case sits against a background of earlier litigation involving the same hospital. In 2019, Akua Nyarko Osei-Bonsu died after a caesarean section at Ridge Hospital. Her husband, Mohammed Mustapha, sued the facility, the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service and the Attorney-General. On 31st July 2024, an Accra High Court found negligence and awarded him GH¢3 million in damages. The court noted failures in post-operative care that led to thromboembolism. The hospital later filed an appeal against that judgment.
Asante has not yet released a detailed timeline of the medical decisions taken on 16th July 2026. Ridge Hospital and the Ghana Health Service had not issued a public response by the evening of 28th August 2026. The family intends to seek full transparency once the burial rites conclude.
Maternal deaths linked to delivery complications remain a persistent concern in Ghana’s public health system. Elective caesarean sections carry known risks that require strict adherence to protocols before, during and after surgery. Families who lose loved ones in these settings often face long waits for official inquiries and, in some cases, turn to the courts as Mustapha did.
Asante’s stated next step is to lay out the full account after the funeral. The Ministry of Health now faces public pressure, amplified by Mugeez’s call, to examine the specific circumstances of Theresa Boakye Dua’s death and determine whether any disciplinary or corrective measures are required. The newborn continues to be cared for by the surviving family while questions about the care provided at Ridge Hospital remain open.
