Kailani Ibrahim Kpa, the Black Stars supporter known as Powder Man, was arrested on 24th August 2026 at East Legon in Accra by officers from the Ghana Police Service Documentation and Visa Fraud Unit. He faces allegations that he collected more than US$30,000 from over 13 people after promising to arrange travel to Canada, Nicaragua and the United States.
He appeared before Accra Circuit Court 9 on 26th August 2026. The court granted him bail of GH¢400,000 with three sureties. One surety must be justified. The other two must be close family relatives. The case was adjourned to 28th September 2026.
Kpa rose to national and international attention during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Videos of him spraying white powder while cheering the Black Stars went viral and earned him the nickname. He later said he self-funded his entire trip and ran out of money as the team advanced. He made a public appeal for match tickets, flights and hotel support from government, the Ghana Football Association and well-wishers, stressing he was not asking for cash.
Police picked him up after complaints that the promised trips never materialised. Multiple reports state he allegedly took money from individuals and then became hard to reach. GhanaWeb and YEN.com.gh reported the total involved as more than US$30,000 from over 13 people. Some alleged victims speaking in videos shared by Tina News cited individual payments between US$8,500 and US$9,200. One man said he sold his car after telling Kpa his wife was pregnant. Separate claims circulating online put combined dollar figures around US$50,800 plus GH¢85,000 from another person. Police and the court have not released official totals.
Before the court date, Kpa posted on social media that he had gone to the police station himself. He insisted he passed the money to travel agents and did not keep it. Footage from the court premises on 26th August showed him arriving under police escort wearing a nose mask and green hoodie.
The allegations remain before the court. Kpa is presumed innocent until proven otherwise. The Documentation and Visa Fraud Unit continues to handle the investigation. Similar visa and travel scams have affected many Ghanaians in recent years, with the British High Commission previously noting over 1,600 people duped by fraudulent agents in 2024 alone.
Kpa’s sudden shift from World Cup viral fame to court has drawn heavy online comment. His earlier appeal for World Cup support has resurfaced alongside the fraud claims. No official link has been established between the two. The next court hearing on 28th September 2026 will determine the next steps in the case.
