The West African Examinations Council released the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination provisional results for school candidates on Wednesday, 29 July 2026. Results went out to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education for onward distribution to schools, and are also live on WAEC's online portal.
A total of 620,243 candidates sat the exam - 304,415 boys against 315,828 girls, meaning more girls wrote the BECE this year than boys. They were drawn from 20,789 schools and wrote at 2,237 centres across the country. Against that number, 3,601 registered candidates did not show up.
WAEC's support figures for candidates with disabilities: 136 visually impaired, 282 hearing-impaired, and 510 candidates with other special needs.
The 37th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners' Appointment Committee approved a set of sanctions tied to examination malpractice. Subject results for 496 candidates were cancelled outright. A further 105 candidates had their entire results cancelled - every subject, not just one.
Separately, subject results for 119 candidates were withheld, and 48 candidates have their entire results withheld pending further investigation. The largest single action affects 2,722 candidates across 229 schools, whose subject results are withheld for further scrutiny. WAEC says that review will close by 31 August 2026, ending in either release or cancellation depending on findings.
School heads have a separate official login for the same information.
WAEC has issued a public warning against fraudsters claiming they can alter or upgrade results for payment. The council states its results are secure, tamper-proof and independently verifiable..
Checking results online
Candidates need a valid results-checker voucher or PIN, through buycheckercodes.com.gh and similar licensed agents. From there: go to eresults.waecgh.org, enter your index number twice to confirm it, select "BECE School" or "BECE Private," choose exam year 2026, enter the serial number and PIN from the voucher, clear the CAPTCHA, and submit. Results display in a new window and can be downloaded or printed at any internet café.
The Release date timeline
The release date moved more than once. An earlier target had results out by mid-July, around the 15th. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu had said publicly that results were expected on or before 31 July, so that the Computerised School Selection and Placement System could open on schedule - candidates now pick their schools after seeing their grades, not before.
Nigeria's National Examinations Council runs its own, separate BECE and released those results earlier, around late June 2026, with a resit in Mathematics and English Studies scheduled for July. That is a different exam board with no bearing on Ghana's WAEC release.
As of 30 July 2026, WAEC has not published a further update on the 2,722 withheld cases beyond the 31 August resolution date. Candidates and school heads with questions on individual cases should go directly through irreg.waecgh.org rather than third-party pages, given the fraud warning WAEC has already issued this week.
